Editors’ Foreword: Ten Years of the Hobart Festival of Women Writers

Since the fall of 2013, the Hobart Book Village has hosted an annual festival to honor, create, and celebrate the work of women writers. The festival has become a beloved home for women writers who gather each summer to teach and learn about the writing life. Participants of all ages travel to our small village in upstate New York to attend workshops, write, and read their work in public gatherings open to all.

After the Zoom pause we all experienced, the festival enthusiastically returned to our live format in the summer of 2022. This year, 2023, will mark our tenth year gathering together: ten years of storytelling, poetry making, memoir writing, and memorable readings. To commemorate the many wonderful works that have emerged over this decade, we’ve joined forces with Bushel, a collective dedicated to art, agriculture, ecology, and action based in nearby Delhi, to produce this selection of writings from Festival Participating Writers. With it we hope to honor the range of talent, originality, and breadth of the festival as a whole.

We welcome you, reader, to the work of the eleven writers published here. To their memoirs, poetry, fiction, nonfiction—writings that meet and challenge us with substance and unwithering stamina. To the array of narrative voices, unusual perspectives, and ironic outcomes that distinguish these rich offerings.
