Disturbances (Jennifer Kabat and Laura Marris)

This hand-bound pamphlet contains one text from each author and was produced on the occasion of the June 18, 2023 opening for the group exhibition Waiting in the Deep, at which the authors presented their work.

Jennifer Kabat’s twinned books The 8th Moon and Nightshining will be published by Milkweed Editions in 2024 and 2025. The diptych is tied to histories in Delaware County, the 1840s Anti-Rent War and the 1950 Rainmaker’s Flood. Awarded a Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant for her criticism, she has written for Frieze, Granta, BOMB, Harper’s, The Believer, and McSweeney’s and been included in Best American EssaysShe lives in Margaretville, serves in her local fire department and teaches in the Design Research MA program at SVA. 

Laura Marris is a writer and translator. Her work has appeared in The New York TimesThe Yale ReviewThe Believer, and elsewhere. She has received support from MacDowell and the Robert B. Silvers Foundation. Her first solo-authored book, The Age of Loneliness, is forthcoming from Graywolf in 2024. In this collection of essays, she focuses on landscapes where personal and ecological loneliness entangle and inform each other—like flooded airports, disappearing lakes, or a fake city for self-driving cars. She teaches creative writing at the University at Buffalo.
