SCREENING

Bushel is pleased to turn over its space to This & That (Bushel’s wonderful next-door neighbor) on Friday nights during the month of October for their Death-Hi movie series. First up, The Human Centipede–First Sequence (Netherlands, 2009), directed by Tom Six, and featuring Dieter Laser, Ashley C. Williams, Ashlynn Yennie, and Akihiro Kitamura. Pre-screening lounge in the This & That garden begins at 6:15 pm. Screening starts at 7 pm at Bushel. Free to attend; seating limited to 30; mask optional. Be forewarned: there’s gore, plenty of it.

One of the most controversial films of recent memory, The Human Centipede follows a deranged  surgeon with a methodical thirst for ultimate control over three unsuspecting and unnamed travelers. Panned by some critics as nothing more than a conventional body-horror flick and revered by others as a hideously veiled study of consumption and loss of identity, one thing is for certain, this movie is disgustingly entertaining.

=========

Movies in the Death-Hi series were chosen with captivity in mind. Each film offers an uncomfortable perspective into people being held against their will. Whether it be a toxic relationship, a bad business deal, or Netflix binging during quarantine, we can all relate to a sense of being held captive.
