Please join us for a reception to celebrate a short-run exhibition of paintings by Bovina-based artist and leatherworker Bernie Seringer. Jr., And Now for Something Different. The exhibition will be on view through September 10.

A prolific creator, Seringer started painting at age 12 with paint-by-number kits. He painted off and on throughout a 35-year-long career at his custom leatherworking shop in Oyster Bay, Long Island. Now residing in the mountains of Bovina, New York, Seringer paints nearly every night, especially in the wintertime during the long dark months. “I sit down and start putting paint down,” explains Seringer, “then I paint whatever comes to mind.” To keep up with his copious production, Seringer picks up frames from yard sales and paints over canvases he sources from thrift stores. On the recent passing of a fellow artist friend, Seringer inherited a cache of his friend’s portrait photographs and abstract photographic prints. Seringer overpainted these colorful works, leaving remnants of the original visible; the result is a series of hauntingly poignant portrait paintings and stirring abstract compositions.
