Join us for an evening of poetry and music with writers Eboné Bishop and Marianne Shaneen, and musical guest Zach Layton. Words + Music is a seasonal series hosted by Iris Cushing and anna moschovakis.
Eboné is an organizational strategist, social architect, and Founder and CEO of Evolv, a boutique advisory firm that collaborates with leaders of companies, cultural institutions, and nonprofits to build teams, systems, and products that reflect their identity, while helping them navigate and engage with the pressing issues of our time. Prior to this work, Eboné was an international corporate transactions attorney who lived and worked throughout Asia specializing in mergers and acquisitions. She received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and B.A. in Politics from Brandeis University. Eboné is also a Lecturer at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at NYU, a Senior Fellow and Board Member of Humanity in Action, and hosts the radio show, Unleashing Humanity, on WIOX Community Radio 91.3FM, where she explores the powerful ways that music builds culture, community, and consciousness.
Marianne Shaneen writes essays and fiction, and has worked in documentary video. Her work has appeared in The Kenyon Review, Bomb, The Brooklyn Rail, Manchester University Press, and elsewhere. She’s been a fellow at numerous residencies including Yaddo, MacDowell, Djerassi, Kebbel Villa, and Tusen Takk, and is a NYSCA Individual Artist grant recipient. She received her MFA in writing from the Bard Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, NY. She has been commissioned for numerous pieces for artists and filmmakers such as Peggy Ahwesh, Bambitchell, and Miruna Dragan. She teaches creative nonfiction and seminars on the ‘more-than-human-world’ at Ramapo College, NJ. She recently finished her first novel, Homing, and is working on her second.
Zach Layton is a guitarist, composer, curator, and professor based in New York. He has composed orchestral music for the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and the String Orchestra of Brooklyn and has performed and exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum, the Kitchen, MoMa/PS1, ISSUE Project Room, Roulette, EMPAC, Eyebeam, International Computer Music Festival, Experimental Intermedia, Performa, Exit Art, Sculpture Center, Transmediale Berlin, SCOPE Art Foundation, Audio Art Festival Krakow and many other venues in New York and worldwide. He has worked with a diverse range of artists and musicians including Vito Acconci, Bradley Eros, Bobby Previte, Henry Fraser, Ben Vida, Tony Conrad, Victoria Keddie, Tristan Perich, Elliott Sharp, Joshua White, David Grubbs, Loren Connors, Luke Dubois, Peggy Ahwesh, Bradford Reed, Alex Waterman, and many more. Zach is also founder of the experimental music series, “Darmstadt: Classics of the Avant Garde” (co-curated with Nick Hallett), former co-curator of the MoMa/PS1 WarmUp music series and former curator of Issue Project Room. Zach has received grants from the Fulbright Foundation, Turbulence.org, NYFA, Experimental Television Center, Danish Council for Visual Arts, Jerome Foundation, Signal Culture, Wave Farm and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant to artists award in the Music/Sound category. Zach is a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU, the Milton Avery Graduate School for the Arts at Bard College MFA program, and PhD at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute.
