Bushel is delighted to be hosting a retrospective solo exhibition of works by Sandra Finkenberg.

For more than fifty years, Sandra Finkenberg has been making paintings in Delaware County. The works collected in ‘Taking Stock’ were painted between 1980 and 2024. They include landscapes and portraits; scenes of play, work, and rest; compositions inspired by walks through the words and fields of Bovina and the surrounding areas (some painted en plein air, some in the studio). They vary in medium and substrate, scale, tone, and drama. Recalling methods of the Early Renaissance, Finkenberg primes cradled and pressed wood panels with animal glue and whiting; her primary medium is powdered pigment mixed with egg tempera which she makes herself with pure egg yolk and water. Finkenberg often makes numerous studies in notebooks before approaching a larger painting; several of these notebooks are on display in the vitrine, along with smaller works on board that demonstrate a larger brushstroke and looser hand. A small print stands in for the years she spent living in New York City during Mayor Beame’s administration (1974–1977) selling illustrations to tourists in front of major institutions like the Met to sustain her practice. Bushel Collective is honored to share with Delaware County a distinct and attentive body of work within the landscape that inspired it.

Sandra Finkenberg received her training at the Carnegie Mellon School of Art in Pittsburgh and the Art Students League in New York. Her work has been exhibited at Vivianna Hansen Gallery (Delhi NY), Windham Fine Arts (Windham NY), The Smithy (Cooperstown), and the Salmagundi Invitational (New York NY), and in solo exhibitions at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (Narrowsburg NY), Walt Meade Gallery (Roxbury NY) and Brighthill Word and Image (Franklin NY), CANO (Oneonta NY) and Erpf Gallery / The Catskills Center (Arkville NY). Her work has received awards and commendations by the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, Cooperstown Regional, and UCCA (now CANO). Her work in egg tempera has been featured in American Artist Watercolor magazine. Finkenberg has been a resident of Bovina for the last fifty years.
