PROGRAM HOSTING at Bushel
[revised: January 2025]
Through trial-and-error we have developed guidelines for sharing this space with presenters and with the public at a low cost to all. These guidelines cover all mission-aligned programming that is proposed to Bushel from the community. Please review our Mission Statement to see if your proposal fits. Please note that most Bushel events are either free or low-cost / sliding scale (up to $25 entry fee for ticketed events). Below, “Presenter” refers to the community member or organization that has proposed to host an event at Bushel.
BASIC EXPECTATIONS
In the course of scheduling an event, a more robust Agreement will be shared, but here are some essential things to know before submitting your proposal:
SPACE PREPARATION + EQUIPMENT
– Bushel will provide a broom-clean space and lockbox access and/or a Bushel contact to provide access.
– Presenter will leave Bushel in the condition found, otherwise will be charged a $60 at-cost cleaning fee. Presenter will be extra careful to lock the door!
– Presenter will have access to Bushel’s chairs and A/V equipment if desired, but Bushel does not provide tech support except by arrangement.
EVENT PROMOTION
Bushel does standard promotion for all of our events including website listing, social media, window flyers or calendar, and a monthly newsletter. Bushel cannot guarantee an audience or workshop registrants; all presenters are strongly encouraged to do their own additional promotion.
SPACE-USE FEES / PROCEEDS SHARING
Most Bushel events are offered either at a low cost to the public, or for free, and fall into either category A or B below.
A) for events for which the presenter will be making any money through their program (via entry fees, passing the hat, etc), Presenter will pay out to Bushel the higher amount of either:
—a space-use fee of $25 for the first 2 hours + $5 per additional hour (including set-up and break-down)
or
—20% of the gross income made by Presenter at the events (e.g. workshop fees, entry fee, etc; merch sales excluded)
(For ticketed events, if Bushel is processing tickets through our Square or Paypal, the processing fees will be covered by the Presenter. The decision about how to handle ticket sales is made on a case-by-case basis by Bushel with the Presenter.)
B) For events offered completely for free, Bushel and the Presenter will discuss an alternate arrangement.
Exceptions:
– For literary readings (poetry/prose), Bushel does not charge for space use, but reserves the right to set out a donation box.
– Other occasional exceptions to this rule of thumb are made, e.g. for public-service programs like NARCAN trainings or other one-off events.
